CV Tips
Even HR Managers who are looking for a new challenge fail to get selected for interviews. Some of you may find this amazing but it is true, not even the professionals get it right!Creating a new CV for the post you are applying to is paramount in ensuring that you are giving the application your best shot (assuming off course that CV applications are deemed acceptable by the employer – don’t get this wrong!). Too many people simply send the same CV to any number of jobs and wonder why they never get an interview. The key here is to match the Job Requirements to the experience, skills and qualifications you have gained over the years.
It is imperative that you read carefully the job description to ensure you are really interested in the job. Don’t just read the first few lines, get excited about the money on offer and tickbox that the location suits you – again, a mistake made by many looking for that perfect job!
Spend time reading carefully all that the employer is looking for and assure yourself that you do indeed feel this is the job for you. Once confirmed, you may proceed.
Creating a CV that matches what any employer is looking for is not just as simple as it sounds. First and foremost, you must actually have the qualifications and experience required. Assuming this is true, you must then set out to highlight exactly how you match the criteria the employer has deemed critical for any potential employee to match.
Your CV should be no more than 2 or maximum 3 pages long and should be neat throughout – use a font that you feel is clear and easily read.
Page 1 – Your Personal Details and Education
Page 2 – Your Work Experience starting with most recent or current employer.
Page 3 – Continue with Work Experience and finish off with your Referees contact details
There are always exceptions to the rule and it should be noted that some positions (e.g. Graphic Designer) may need to include samples of work created to date.
Remember, amend your CV each time you apply for a new role and tailor the CV to highlight how you match with the employer is looking for. Below is a sample of how you may wish to lay out your CV:
